ScreenOff

Privacy Policy

Effective September 30, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Laura Mühlbach (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information when you use the ScreenOff iOS application and the screenoff.web.app website (together, the “Service”).

Information ScreenOff handles

Account identifier

ScreenOff automatically creates an anonymous Firebase account. You do not provide an email address or password, but the generated identifier is used to keep your profile, challenges, notifications, and purchases working together.

Profile and challenge information

We store the display name, emoji avatar, and optional age band you provide, as well as challenge membership, invite codes, challenge status, weekly results, and related timestamps.

Screen Time information

ScreenOff uses Apple’s Family Controls and Device Activity frameworks with your permission. Your selected app names, category names, website domains, and Apple Family Controls tokens remain on your device. We store only:

Challenge participants can see approximate total-use comparisons associated with your display name and emoji. They cannot see which specific apps, categories, or websites you use.

Notifications and device information

If you enable notifications, we process an Apple/Firebase push token to deliver challenge updates, reminders, and background synchronization. We also process your time zone to schedule weekly checkpoints appropriately.

Diagnostics and crash information

ScreenOff uses Firebase Crashlytics to collect crash reports and non-fatal error diagnostics so we can keep the app reliable. Diagnostics may include stack traces, device and OS information, app version, an anonymous app user identifier, and technical error details (such as which feature failed). They do not include your display name, emoji, invite codes, or Screen Time app/category/website selections.

Anonymous usage analytics

ScreenOff uses Mixpanel to understand whether core features work and which features are useful. Mixpanel creates a random identifier for this installation. We do not connect that identifier to your Firebase account. We create a minimal Mixpanel profile containing only that random identifier and the fixed label “anonymous installation” so activity from the same installation can be counted together.

We send only allowlisted product-interaction events, such as completing an onboarding step, creating or joining a challenge, opening a weekly recap, using an app blocker, viewing the paywall, or completing a purchase. Events may include a timestamp, app version, operating-system and device metadata, and fixed properties such as an action type or the screen from which a paywall was opened.

We do not send Screen Time totals or buckets, selected apps, categories or websites, your name, emoji, age band, Firebase identifier, notification token, challenge or invite identifiers, challenge names, precise location, advertising identifiers, URLs, notification content, raw errors, or other free-form content to Mixpanel. Automatic event collection and IP-based geolocation are disabled.

Anonymous analytics are enabled by default. You can turn them off at any time in Settings → Privacy → Share anonymous usage analytics. The choice is stored on this installation and does not follow you to another device or survive reinstall. Turning analytics off stops future uploads and clears events still queued on the device, but it does not erase events already received by Mixpanel.

Purchases

ScreenOff Pro may be purchased as an auto-renewable weekly or monthly subscription or as a one-time lifetime purchase. Apple processes payments. RevenueCat helps us determine whether ScreenOff Pro is active and may process an app user identifier, product identifiers, transaction and entitlement status, purchase dates, and related technical information. We do not receive your complete payment card details.

Website information

When you visit screenoff.web.app, hosting providers may process standard request information such as IP address, browser type, requested page, and timestamps for security and delivery. The website does not use advertising cookies.

How we use information

Legal bases

Where the GDPR applies, we process information to perform our agreement with you, based on your consent where requested by iOS, to pursue legitimate interests in operating, improving, and securing the Service (including limited anonymous product analytics and crash/error diagnostics), and to comply with legal obligations. You can object to anonymous product analytics using the in-app switch and can revoke Screen Time or notification permission in iOS Settings.

Service providers

We share information only as needed with providers that operate the Service:

These providers process data under their own terms and privacy commitments. We do not sell personal information or use it for cross-app advertising or tracking.

Retention and deletion

We retain account, profile, challenge, and purchase-related records while needed to provide the Service, preserve shared challenge history, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, and prevent abuse. Invite codes for abandoned pending challenges are periodically removed. Crash and error diagnostics are retained according to Firebase Crashlytics retention settings for long enough to diagnose reliability issues. Mixpanel automatically deletes analytics events after two years.

You can delete your ScreenOff account from Settings → Delete Account. This removes your anonymous Firebase account, profile, and stored screen-time history, removes you from challenges, and rotates the local Mixpanel installation identifier. Other participants keep the shared challenge and their own data. Previously received Mixpanel events remain until Mixpanel's retention period expires unless a separate deletion request is completed. App Store purchases stay with your Apple ID and are not cancelled. To request access to or deletion of information associated with ScreenOff, or if you cannot use the in-app deletion flow, email la.muehlbach@gmail.com. Because ScreenOff uses anonymous identifiers, we may need information available inside the app to locate the correct record. Some transaction records may be retained by Apple, RevenueCat, or us where legally required.

Your choices and rights

You can switch anonymous usage analytics off in Settings → Privacy, delete your ScreenOff account in Settings, and change Screen Time and notification permissions in iOS Settings. Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to processing, or receive a portable copy of your personal information, and to complain to a data protection authority.

Children

ScreenOff is not directed to children under 13. If you are below the age at which you can consent to data processing in your country, use ScreenOff only with permission from a parent or guardian. Contact us if you believe a child provided information without appropriate permission.

International transfers

Our providers may process information in countries other than your own. Where required, they and we use recognized safeguards for international transfers.

Security

We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, including encrypted network transport and access controls. No internet service can guarantee absolute security.

Changes

We may update this policy as ScreenOff changes. We will publish the revised policy here and update the effective date.
